Weekend Snowstorm in Northeast: Power of 'Mother Nature?' (VIDEO)
God showed his might over the weekend by disrupting life for millions in the Northeast with a suprise fall blizzard. Ending on Sunday, the massive snowfall ranged from a foot in Boston to six inches in New York City.
Some 200,000 were still without power Monday morning in Philadelphia, and 6 are dead in Pennsylvania as the result of the early October snow.
Termed by meteorologist Dr. Jeff Masters of Weather Underground as the most extraordinary October snowstorm in over two centuries, he also said, "Not since the infamous snow hurricane of 1804 have such prodigious amounts of snow been recorded." The snow in the Northeast U.S. finally came to an end this Sunday afternoon.
"The records are broken are simply unbelievable," according to Masters. The previous New York Central Park record dating to 1869 at 0.8 inches was set in 1925.
The highest weekend total in New York City itself was in Fieldston in the New York City borough of the Bronx with 6 inches.
A whopping 19 inches were reported 45 miles northwest of Manhattan at West Milford, N.J. Newark, N.J. reported 5.2 inches, the city's greatest October snowfall on record.
Snow was just an aspect of this Nor’easter, as winds also pummeled the coast. A wind gust of 69 mph was recorded at Nantucket, Mass., where there were sustained 50 mph winds. The top wind gust on Long Island, New York was 58 mph at Sands Point.
