5. The famous carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is based on Epiphany.

The evening before Epiphany is known as Twelfth Night, while the time period from Dec. 25 through Jan. 6 is known as the Twelve Days of Christmas, with the 6th being a “13th” day in some traditions.

With lyrics dating back to 1909, the famous Christmas carol includes the line “and a partridge in a pear tree” as it describes a gift given by the author’s “true love.”

But don’t sing for too long: at least one English superstition suggests it’s unlucky to keep your Christmas decorations up beyond the Twelfth Night.
