Wii U Sales Up 340% in the US After Strong November for Nintendo

The Wii U is on the rise in the US as Nintendo's latest numbers indicate the console's sales rose by 340% in the month of November.

Super Mario World 3D was a big help in those extra sold consoles as NPD Group revealed that the game sold 215,000 units in its first eight days.

"This holiday season, Nintendo is offering an unparalleled combination of value and variety," said Nintendo of America executive Scott Moffitt according to DigitalSpy.

The 3DS upped its lifetime sales totals to 10.5 million as they sold 770,000 units last month.

"In looking at these results, two things are indisputable: Our hardware is gaining momentum at the exact right time and our software catalog is stronger than ever," Moffitt said.

Wii U is only expected to sell about 25 percent as well as its predecessor the Wii, and will most likely remain a system that will find its success in first party games.

DFC Intelligence reported these findings to IGN when, they said the Wii U "is expected to be mainly a system for Nintendo first-party software," and "sales [are] anticipated to be only about a quarter of the Wii."

The Wii just sold its 100 millionth console, and the Wii U is expected to only do slightly better than the Wii's predecessor, the Gamecube, which sold 22 million.

Nintendo was anticipating selling around nine million units this year, and not only is that number far reaching but it is not even close if adding last year's totals as well. As the console stands now, it has sold 4 million units since its launch last fall. Compare that to the PS4 and Xbox One selling one million each on their launch day, and the Wii U's numbers are not impressive at all.

"Wii U has become a game console only for Nintendo fans," Eiji Maeda of SMBC Nikko Securities said. "Wii U needs groundbreaking software to draw casual and hardcore gamers."

Their latest titles have included Super Mario 3D World, Wii Fit U, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD remake. Coming later this month is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Early next year gamers can expect Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros 4, and perhaps Zelda Wii U.
