Sears was known for being involved in multiple faith-based charitable endeavors, including overseeing a men’s prison ministry and a Salvation Army homeless shelter.

In February, she told the Blue Ridge Herald that this charity work “you can’t help people who don’t want to be helped. You can’t help people until they are willing to change.”

At her victory speech held very early on Wednesday morning, Sears said she believed “God was exactly with us, otherwise we would never have made it.”

“We ran an impossible, improbable campaign,” said Sears. “And so I want to finish up by thanking you, Jesus. How sweet it is!”
