Actor Benedict Cumberbatch Engaged to Theater Director and Actress Sophie Hunter

"Sherlock Holmes" actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been revealed to be engaged to theater director and actress Sophie Hunter. The announcement was made in a U.K. newspaper in the "Forthcoming Marriages" section with the heading "Mr. B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter."

"The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London," the announcement continued.

The 38-year old actor has been keeping quiet about their relationship in recent years, with speculations that their romance started as early as 2009 when Cumberbatch and Hunter starred together in a short horror film, "Burlesque Fairytales."

Cumberbatch and Hunter – 36-years old – were spotted together during a tennis match earlier this summer but they managed to keep their relationship away from the media. There are also reports that Cumberbatch had headed to Edinburgh last month to seek the blessing of Sophie's mother for their marriage.

There is still no given date for the wedding but the engagement news comes some weeks after George Clooney and Brad Pitt tied down the knot. Cumberbatch's representative said, "I am delighted to confirm this morning's announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged."

Last year, the actor had described that his ideal girlfriend was, "A woman who knows that she doesn't have to get all decked out to look good is sexy."

"A woman who can make you feel smart with her conversation skills is also sexy. I believe the sense of humour is important. I also think someone who is good at working with others is sexy," he adds.

Apparently, Sophie Hunter fit that specific description.
