Amazon Fire HD 10 Specs Review: A Mediocre Tablet with Average Specs

Amazon has been known for producing Kindle Fire tablets that could stand as reasonable alternatives to the expensive Apple devices, but things may be different with the recently unveiled Fire HD 10.

The $50 Fire tablet was unveiled a few weeks ago, and many remarked at how the price tag justifies its specs and features. On the other hand, the Fire HD 10 has garnered a lot of negative reviews, especially since it debuted at $229, according to Extreme Tech.

The Fire HD tablet is thin at 0.3 inches and is a bit lighter than the iPad Air. It sports a wide screen that is recommended for content reading and entertainment, but the device itself seems like a far cry from the rest of Amazon's smaller and more high-end tablet devices, Mashable reports.

One of the most common complaints about the Fire HD 10 is its slow processor. Amazon said the device runs a MediaTek MT8135 SoC quad-core processor, so this means the chip is not the latest and could barely deliver the speed that a 2015 tablet is supposed to have, the report details.

Another issue is the somewhat second-rate display of the Fire HD 10. Since Amazon's previous tablets have a good balance between screen size and resolution, it came as quite a surprise that its latest tablet has a 149 PPI display. Amazon has been trying to compete with Microsoft, Apple, and other large-screen tablet makers, but releasing a device with its lowest-quality display gives consumers content that look fuzzy around the edges.

In addition, the cameras of the Fire HD 10 are described as either "average" or "terrible." While the 5-megapixel rear snapper takes decent images, the front camera takes "awful shots," the report relays.

All Kindle Fire or Fire devices are designed to sell consumers content from the Amazon ecosystem, but the new Fire OS 5 reportedly consumes more screen space and allows more pop-up ads. There are complaints about ads that try to sell consumers versions of a book that they have already bought.

The Fire HD 10 tablet is the third time that Amazon has launched a device with mediocre specs in the past 12 months. This is also the second time that the firm has set an unattractive price for a device with low-end features. All in all, most of the users who have tried the Fire HD 10 are not recommending others to buy the product.
