The HTC One M8 and M9 will receive their Marshmallow update by the end of 2015, followed by the rest of the announced HTC phones by Q1 and Q2 2016.

Unlike the traditional schedule for new OS rollouts, HTC intends to send the updates to its devices outside the US before making it available to devices in North America. In the US, HTC will be providing the Marshmallow update in various US states based on priority, phone model, and carrier.

While update notifications usually appear on a device's notifications panel, users can opt to check for updates manually when they access their handset's Settings menu, click on System Updates under About Phone, and Check for updates.

Google's new firmware was first released a week ago, first rolling out to Google's own Nexus devices, the Nexus 5, 6, 7 (2013), 9, and the Nexus Player, which are currently receiving the update, with the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P shipping with the new OS already installed.

HTC's newer mid-range devices, like the Desire 820, which has yet to receive its own Android 5.1 Lollipop update may have to wait a while longer before getting the Marshmallow. Some of its other devices, like the HTC One M7 will not be a recipient of the new OS rollout at all.

HTC devices may be among the first handset brands to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, if they follow the tradition they began by being among the first to start rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop in November 2014.

A majority of other Android devices may start receiving the update by the second half of 2016 or even later, depending on the manufacturer's schedule for rollout.
