Android Co-Founder Andy Rubin Wants to Launch Own Smartphone Company

Android co-founder Andy Rubin may once again join the Android phone bandwagon by launching his very own company, based on a recent report.

Andy Rubin is currently rounding up tech experts as part of his effort to start his own smartphone company. The co-founder of Android will use his start-up incubator Playground Global to develop his future mobile firm, according to a report from The Information cited by Gadgets 360.

Playground Global, which is partnered with venture capital firm Redpoint Ventures, could be instrumental in helping Rubin's future smartphone company raise funds. So far, Playground has already raised $300 million for tech start-ups, Tech Times reports.

Rubin's role in the smartphone company is still not clearly defined. He could be the hands-on leader of the firm or he could only help in raising funds. Regardless, his nine years of experience with Google will prove to be a great advantage for him if he launches his own firm, the report details.

There are those questioning Rubin's plan because the mobile industry is crowded with a lot of OEMs and hardware makers striving for uniqueness and profit. The mobile phone market is currently full of various brands competing against each other, so Rubin would have to find a way to make his company stand out from the rest when the time comes for it to be launched.

However, for Rubin, the Android phone market still has a vast space full of opportunities for tech start-ups. Being the father of Android, he probably has a lot of ideas in store. In particular, he is targeting the high-end market, which is being dominated by Apple. His future company will reportedly ride on industry trends.

As of now, Andy Rubin's next move for his own smartphone company is still unconfirmed. More details about his future company are expected to surface in the coming months.
