Benson Mayowa Officially Joins Cowboys After Raiders Failed to Match Offer
Benson Mayowa is no longer a restricted free agent and he's not going to return to the Oakland Raiders either. After the team declined to match the offer from the Dallas Cowboys, the defensive end will now be joining a retooled NFC East franchise looking to regain lost glory.
An earlier report from Todd Archer of ESPN said that the Cowboys offered Mayowa a three-year deal worth $8.25 million plus a signing bonus of $3.3 million. The 24-year old will be entering his fourth season in the league after the Seattle Seahawks picked him up as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He only played in two games for the team before getting cut. He was then claimed off waivers by the Raiders and was able to complete two seasons in Oakland.
As a defensive lineman, he produced 32 combined tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble in a total of 30 games so far in his young career. Those numbers aren't really something that any team will crave for, but it certainly looks like Dallas is willing to bet that he will eventually come out of his slump and become a key contributor. Prior to the signing, the team reportedly wanted to get a player who will have certain value in a couple of years. Although he hasn't been that productive, at 24, he still has a lot of years in him.

Although the Raiders decided not to match the offer sheet, the contract he's expected to sign with the Cowboys isn't really a huge one. It just shows that his old team simply didn't feel like he's going to be an integral part of the future. As for the Cowboys, they're one of the few teams in the league that needs an overhaul; an upgrade to practically every position. Last year, they ranked at the bottom when it comes to sacks, so Mayowa's addition is expected to be a major step towards an improvement in this area.
