BMW Unveils New Concept Cars Highlighted by a Hulking SUV and Electric Luxury Car

BMW is living up the hype of making its 100th anniversary the best ever by unveiling a new set of hybrid and electric cars, composed of three vehicles which are more like a hundred years ahead of everyone else. There's the i8 Roadster, a rejigged i3 city car, and a newcomer that the company is called as the "i" Next.

Basically a convertible variety of the already existing i8 sports car (hybrid), the i8 Roadster is expected to become available on the market by 2018. The older sibling was unveiled two years back. While there is no confirmation yet, it is likely that the drivetrain will be similar to the hard-topped variety, suggesting that the electric motor in front and the 231 hp petrol engine at the back will both be retained.

The second concept car is actually an existing one with several major improvements. Considered as a "refreshed" version, it comes equipped with a bigger capacity battery, which also means longer coverage in between charges. The upgrades are expected to be installed to both the electric version and the range extender version, where a small petrol engine is equipped to serve as a generator. BMW certainly wanted to introduce a more practical car since the old i3 only managed a maximum of 100 miles in one charge while the cheaper competitors could go up to 150.

The last concept car announced is an entirely new entry from the car manufacturer in its "I" range. While there were little details provided, BMW Chairman Harald Kruger did say that the vehicle will be the one that will take the brand to the next level. The International Business Times revealed rumors that this "i" vehicle is likely going to be a family saloon car that will be marketed as a direct competitor to Tesla's Model 3 and Model S.
