'Bourne 5' Spoilers, Cast News: Jason Bourne Will Be 'In A Dark And Tortured Place,' Says Matt Damon
The long-awaited return of Oscar-winning actor Matt Damon to the "Bourne" franchise is almost here and the actor has opened up about what fans of Jason Bourne can expect from the untitled fifth film.
"We find him in a dark and tortured place," Damon says in this week's EW First Look issue.
Damon, who is producing, as well as starring in, the forthcoming fifth "Bourne" film, explains, "There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties."

"Bourne 5" marks the reunion of Damon, who has starred in three out of the four films in the "Bourne" series, with Paul Greengrass, who directed 2004's "The Bourne Supremacy" and 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum." Neither Damon nor Greengrass were involved in 2012's "The Bourne Legacy," which starred Jeremy Renner.
In an interview with Variety in December, Damon revealed that the fifth "Bourne" film will pick up 12 movie years from when Jason Bourne disappeared in 2004. According to the actor, the events that transpired in the intervening years gives "Bourne 5" its story.
When asked whether or not he thought that he was done with the "Bourne" franchise, Damon replied, "I wasn't sure." He added: "I hoped I wasn't because I really liked the franchise and the character but I didn't see a way to go. But I wasn't giving up on the idea of doing it."
"Paul and I kind of talked years ago about perhaps the way forward was just to let time pass and allow the world to change a little," he revealed.
The "Bourne" film series is based on the novels by Robert Ludlum. Along with Damon, the latest film also stars Julia Stiles, Vincent Cassel, and Tommy Lee Jones.
The as-yet-untitled fifth "Bourne" movie is set to hit theaters on July 16, 2016.
