Boxing Rumors: Liam Smith Targets Kell Brook Fight This Year
Undefeated WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith is looking for the big fights out there. The young British professional boxer is coming off a 7th round knockout victory over his fellow Brit, Jimmy Kelly last December to retain his title. Although he's not looking past Predrag Radosevic in his scheduled defense in June, "Beefy" isn't shy when it came to his desire to fight Kell Brook sometime this year.
The 27-year-old said that Kell Brook is the fight he wants; referring to his countryman, who happens to be the current IBF welterweight champion. As per Fight News, Smith admits he and Brook are acquainted and that he's a good guy.
"But it's a fight that people would love to see," he added.
It certainly will be a highly explosive matchup between Britain's top boxers. Another popular fighter, Amir Khan, is likely going to be out of the picture for some time after suffering a devastating knockout loss against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez a couple of weeks back.
But before Smith can start advertising a fight with Brook, he still has to finish his next assignment against a worthy and dangerous opponent. The 31-year-old Radosevic is a veteran campaigner who successfully fought in the middleweight division for 10 years. His most notable fight was against German 160-pound champ Felix Sturm, according to World Boxing News. That fight against Sturm remains as the only blemish to his record. The Montenegro native comes in with an impressive record of 30 wins (11 KOs) and 1 loss.
The Smith-Radosevic fight will be held at the Echo Arena on June 4 with Smith's WBO title on the line.
Although his star status is not as bright to that of Brook and Khan, at least for now, Smith is as capable as them. He made his grand entrance to the world boxing scene in October of last year when he defeated American fighter John Thompson via TKO in the seventh round, eventually taking the championship belt. He successfully defended that title against Kelly two months after.
