Boys Attempt Robbery in Church Parking Lot

Two boys, aged just seven and 11 years old, have been accused of attempted robbery at the weekend in a church parking lot in Portland. The two young boys reportedly had a loaded firearm, according to police, and attempted to carjack a 22 year old woman in a church parking lot.

The woman, Ami Garrett, of southeast Portland, was in fact waiting in in her family's truck for her parents, authorities have explained. Garrett has described to police that she saw the two boys approach her before the young seven year old tell the older, "Show her your piece."

The seven and 11 year olds demanded that Garrett give them her truck, however, she refused to get out and let them have it. When their attempt at taking the truck was foiled they demanded that Garrett hand over her cash and cell phone.

However, instead of complying with the young robbers, Garrett began pulling away in the vehicle. But she then said she saw the 11 year old pull out a gun from his pocket, according to The Associated Press.

The children were later taken into police custody after reports were made to authorities that there were children with guns in the church parking lot.

Police have since said that they have recovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun from the older boy.

The children are too young to be taken to a juvenile detention center, and although police are still investigating how the boys managed to get the gun in their possession, the children have since been returned to their parents.

It was also reported that the 11 year old later tried to escape from his parent's house, but was again quickly apprehended by officers and returned again.

It is believed that the juvenile court will hear the case.
