NBA News, Rumors 2014: Caldwell Jones, Former 76ers Player, Passes Away at 64 From Heart Attack

Caldwell Jones, a player for the Philadelphia 76ers, died Sunday at 64-years old during a heart attack on a suburban golf course. His wife Vanessa confirmed the death. Jones was a key figure for the 76ers during the 1977, 1980, and 1982 NBA Finals.

CEO of the 76ers, Scott O'Neil issued a statement regarding the passing of the iconic player.

"We are truly saddened to learn of the passing of a special member of the Sixers family, Caldwell Jones. He was a consummate teammate, a friend to many and a player who was beloved and respected throughout the league," O'Neil said. "Our franchise and fans will always remember the impact and contributions Caldwell made to the city of Philadelphia."

The NBA and the whole 76ers team extended their condolences to Jones' family. "On behalf of our entire organization, we extend our deepest condolences to the entire Jones family during this difficult time," he added.

Jones was a 6-foot-11 player and a rugged defender who was named to the NBA All-Defensive team in the year 1981 and 1982. He was first drafted by the 76ers from Albany State and in his 17-year career averaged 7.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.

He not only played for the 76ers but for the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls, Portland Trail Blazers, and San Antonio Spurs.

Jones was best-known for his speed and versatility as well as for his outstanding ability to rebound and block shots. At times, he was even asked to guard big players.
