Carolina Panthers Roster Rumors: Jonathan Stewart Ruled Out for Week 15

Running back Jonathan Stewart of the undefeated Carolina Panthers won't be playing in Sunday's clash with the New York Giants after suffering a sprained left foot in their game against the Atlanta Falcons, where they won 38-0.

Head coach Ron Rivera passed the news to the press, adding that the position vacated by Stewart will be filled in by either Mike Tolbert or Fozzy Whittaker.

Although the Panthers (13-0) remain undefeated as the season draws to a close, the recent injuries hurt the team, something that they don't really need heading into the postseason. Aside from Stewart, tight end Greg Olsen is also out, though Rivera said that the Pro Bowl star may be able to finally return to action next game.

Another injured player is cornerback Charles Tillman, who must find a way to fast-track his recovery in time for a matchup against the streaking Eli Manning.

Stewart visited an orthopedic specialist in Charlotte to have his injury evaluated further; the same doctor recommended that he should have a complete rest for a game or two in order to prevent aggravating it.

"We're going to be smart about it. Doc's not necessarily concerned, but he does think the foot needs to be rested," Rivera said about his star running back's injury.

Stewart is currently ranked third in the entire league in rushing, making 989 yards so far. The one-game rest recommended by the specialist also required that he wears a walking boot.

Aside from Tolbert and Whittaker, Rivera also said that rookie Cameron Artis-Payne may also be given his chance to play in Sunday's game, and he certainly deserves it. He led the SEC in rushes last year while playing for Auburn, but opportunities have been rare for him in the Panthers lineup because of the team's depth. He in fact hasn't played in Carolina's last six games.
