According to KMSP-TV, several bursts of gunfire were heard just after 6 p.m. on Monday night near a Rainbow Foods store in the eastern Twin Cities suburb.

Oakdale Police Chief Bill Sullivan has said that the gunman randomly fired at a car that was carrying the 10 year old child and the child's mother, although Sullivan did not confirm whether the child was a boy or a girl.

The child's mother was hit by a gunshot in the arm, and another woman in separate car was also hit in the hand as the gunman continued to fire indiscriminately at cars driving by.

Both women are in shock but are expected to recover from their wound, according to Sullivan.

"It appears to be entirely random," Sullivan has reported to The Associated Press. "At this time it appears he was randomly shooting at vehicles."

Police have confirmed that a 33 year old male suspect has been taken into custody in relation to the shooting, and he is currently being questioned by authorities.

Authorities do not believe there are any other suspects, and that there is no further danger to the public in the area.

Oakdale Mayor Carmen Sarrack has said to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "It's sick. What can you say when a 9-year-old or 10-year-old is killed?"

He added, "People are devastated that this could happen in our city."
