Dallas Cowboys Roster Rumors 2016: Tony Romo to Wait Another Month before Making Surgery Decision
It is almost certain that Dallas Cowboys star Tony Romo will have surgery on his left clavicle; the only question is the date of the procedure. According to the team, the agreed upon plan is that the quarterback will be subjected to another CT scan by the end of the month, in order to get a clearer assessment of the injury. After that, doctors will figure out how to proceed.
Multiple sources are saying that Romo is given two choices at this point. First, his doctors can figure out if it is best to make use of screws to attach a plate on the collarbone so that the likelihood of the injury recurring is minimized. Second, in the event that the CT scan reveals a significant level of bone growth and regeneration compared to last week's results, then doctors will have to go for a Mumford procedure instead. In this procedure, a part of the distal clavicle will be removed.
The second option is of Romo's best interests because it won't require long-term stress on the collarbone. However, it can only be performed based on the results of the CT scan, hence, the one-month wait.
Now suppose Romo's surgery goes underway, the recovery period, regardless of the option he takes, will be from six to eight weeks. It means that if there are no other complications, then the Cowboys star will be available for team practices by May.
The fracture to his left clavicle bothered Romo for the most part of last season. Well, in fact, he only played in four games. The team went 3-1 with him in the lineup and then went on a losing spell (1-11) without him.
But this isn't the first time he's suffered from a major bone injury similar to this. In 2010, he also broke the collarbone in three separate occasions.
