Danny Garcia vs Robert Guerrero Preview: Who's Going to Grab Welterweight Supremacy?

The welterweight division in boxing was once all about two guys — Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. But with the former's retirement and the latter's looming retirement, this fancied and colorful division suddenly has become wide open, and Saturday night's clash between two formidable and worthy heirs to the throne in the person of Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero will determine who the next star will be.

The fight will be for the vacant WBC welterweight title and will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Garcia is an undefeated fighter who once held the WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine belts in a lower division, light welterweight. Guerrero, for his part, is a former multi-division champ.

It's been a while since we've seen two fighters who may be able to provide an action-packed fight in one of boxing's premier division. When Mayweather and Pacquiao reigned, fighters who deserved a crack at them couldn't get their chance if they weren't in the same promotional outfit. But with the departure of the two, fans can now anticipate better matchups, regardless of their promotional companies.

The American-Puerto Rican Garcia hasn't been that active as of late, although he remains an undefeated fighter at 31-0. The last time he fought was August of last year, knocking Paulie Malignaggi out in round nine. That fight was his debut in the welterweight division after a long campaign in the light welterweight class.

Guerrero, on the other hand, is an American boxer who traces his roots in Mexico. He once fought Mayweather but lost in a wide decision. His career highlight is a win against Andre Berto back in 2012, but he hasn't really been a top contender as of late. The last time he fought, he earned a split decision against a relative unknown in Aaron Martinez in a 10-rounder back in June.

While this fight is for the vacant WBC title, what's more at stake is prominence. Both fighters have been under the radar for quite some time and this is one way to make their name matter once again. After all, this division is up for grabs. It's just a matter of making a good impression come Saturday night.
