'Daredevil' Season 2 News: Setting Up 'Defenders' Series Is Like 'Spinning Plates,' EPs Reveal

The Netflix contingent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is rapidly expanding, and fans are on the edges of their seats waiting to see how all of the small-screen Marvel superheroes will get together in the forthcoming "The Defenders" crossover miniseries.

The new season of "Daredevil," the first Marvel Entertainment superhero series made available on Netflix, marks the debut of Marvel Comics characters Elektra (Elodie Yung) and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). And while Season 1 served as sort of a gauge for the Marvel/Netflix partnership, Season 2 now belongs to a wider small-screen Marvel universe and will begin to set up the "Defenders" series. Since the first season of "Daredevil" premiered, "Jessica Jones" also aired its first season and is now gearing up for its second, "Luke Cage" is in production, and "Iron Fist" and "The Defenders" are in development.

"Daredevil" Season 2 showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez recently talked to ComicBook.com about how "The Defenders" has affected their approach to Season 2. "It's definitely opened doors," Petrie said. The "Daredevil" boss also revealed that he and Ramirez, as well as the show's writers and cast, have gotten really good at "how to be collaborative."

According to Petrie, Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Jon Bernthal (The Punisher/Frank Castle), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) have contributed their own ideas for the show and "we almost always fold them in," the "Daredevil" boss said.

Petrie also talked about how he and Ramirez are handling the various storylines for Season 2, saying," …we spin more plates and we have more threads of storyline going through the narrative and, as we look forward to what's coming up ahead, we feel like we'll be able to handle more storylines - complicated storylines - and interweaving different characters in new ways."

Aside from introducing Elektra and The Punisher to the Netflix Marvel Universe in Season 2, Ramirez said that they will also be expanding on the narratives of Karen and Foggy.

"It's an exercise in spinning plates and lighting them on fire and making them spin as quickly and awesomely as possible," he said.

"And not letting them crash," Petrie interjected. "And, I think, we're amazed at how little silverware we broke this year."

The second season of "Daredevil" drops in its entirety on Friday, March 18, on Netflix.
