Darth Vader Vs. Supreme Leader Snoke: Speculations on 'The Force Awakens' Villain's Identity

After the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," fans have been abuzz over the real identity of the villain Supreme Leader Snoke, and some are saying that he is the resurrected Darth Plagueis.

When Supreme Leader Snoke was featured in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," viewers began speculating if his zombie-like appearance could be a hint that he is a resurrected Darth Maul, Palpatine, or even Darth Plagueis. This is one of the most popular theories being expounded online, according to The Guardian.

It is worth noting that Snoke's name is not mentioned in any "Star Wars" comic, cartoon, canon novel, or movie. Plus, Darth Plagueis' real name has never been revealed. Fans also refer to the similarities of the musical background used in Snoke's appearance and in Palpatine's discussion about Plagueis, Movie Pilot reports.

However, there are also several factors indicating that Snoke is not Darth Plagueis. First of all, Andy Serkis told Entertainment Weekly that his character is a new one. In the interview last month, Serkis explained that although the villain was just introduced, he has been existing for some time and is aware of what happened before, the report relays.

In addition, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams mentioned that Snoke's character was developed in the final stages of the movie. He also said he almost made the villain a female.

Moreover, the Sith are supposed to be gone for a long time already. In the prequels, it was prophesied that the galaxy will attain peace after the destruction of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

During a comic-con interview, the "Star Wars" panel was asked if Darth Plagueis will be mentioned in episode 7. Abrams answered directly with a resounding "no," so Snoke could not be the Sith Lord.

Regardless of the Supreme Leader Snoke's real identity, whether he is indeed Darth Plagueis or someone else, the issue has given "Star Wars" fans a lot to look forward to in the next movie.
