The beheading came following a series of bizarre incidents surrounding a local amateur soccer match. The killing seems to have taken place after another incident took place that saw the referee attack a player.

According to Reuters, the referee had stabbed a player on June 30, 2013 after he refused to leave the field after being sent off by the ref. The player angrily challenged the referee and a huge argument erupted, which only ended when the referee shockingly took out a pocket knife and started stabbing the player "repeatedly."

The player in that incident was 30 year old Josenir dos Santos, and he reportedly died on his way to the hospital from his wounds.

Following the stabbing incident, a mob came together and attacked the referee, decapitating him on the pitch. Local reports have described that the mob removed the referee's limbs and placed his head on a stick in an act of revenge for the killed soccer player.

Maranhão Valter Costa, the Chief of Police in Santa Ines, in the north of Brazil has said, "Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact. We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law."

A video of the aftermath of the incident has been leaked onto Liveleak.com and can be viewed by clicking here [WARNING: THE VIDEO IS DESCRIBED AS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC – PLEASE AVOID IF LIKELY TO BE OFFENDED].
