Deryck Whibley Posts New Photo, Thanks Fans Post-Hospitalization
Deryck Whibley, Avril Lavigne's alcohol-embattled ex-husband, shared an update on his condition as well as a new photo over the weekend.
The Sum 41 lead guitarist and vocalist admitted that "hard boozing" has left him at "rock bottom" with a shocking blog post earlier this month. As a result of the drinking, Whibley experienced multiple organ failure and was admitted into intensive care. After admitting that one more drink could end his life, the 34-year-old is recovering at home and took the time to thank fans on May 24.
"I just wanted to thank you all so much for sending gifts and all of the compassion and support you have shown me," Whibley wrote in an updated blog post. "It really means a lot to me in this time of recovery. I will be better soon and back out on the stage before you know it."
Along with the update, Whibley shared a photo of himself sitting on outdoor furniture with a hat and sunglasses on. While much of his face was covered by the sunglasses, the photo revealed a far smaller and frail guitarist. Furthermore, Whibley shared a photo of flowers he had received from supporters.
The update arrives just two weeks after Whibley initially announced his battle against alcohol addiction.
"The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I've been doing over the years," the rocker penned. "It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day. Until one night. I was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around midnight and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden I didn't feel so good. I then collapsed to the ground unconscious."
After a week of hospitalization, Whibley said he awoke without any knowledge of what had happened- his liver and kidneys had "collapsed."
"Needless to say it scared me straight," he wrote. "I finally realized I can't drink anymore. If I have one more drink the docs say I will die."
Additionally, Whibley's post revealed several photos taken of him in the hospital connected to an IV with several wounds on his body. In conclusion, Whibley urged fans to drink responsibly.
"I didn't, and look where that got me," he warned, before promising readers a new album as well as a tour coming soon.
Among Whibley's many supporters is ex-wife Avril Lavigne. The two singers married in 2006, but split four years later.
"Spoke to @Sun41 Deryck today. I am so proud of him. He is family to me and always will be. #StayStrongDeryck," the singer wrote on Twitter.
"Hope you get well soon! @sum41 #StayStrongDeryck," Lavigne later added.
