'Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain' Announced on Tokyo Game Show 2017
A new iteration of the 2003 shooter "Earth Defense Force" was announced during Sony's press conference during this year's Tokyo Game Show. Titled "Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain," the game will be developed by Yuke's and published by D3.
A teaser trailer was released alongside the announcement showcasing some of the series' staple bug-fighting action. The trailer also suggests that this iteration will have a more grounded tone than other light-hearted entries in the series.
According to publisher D3, "Iron Rain" is new territory for the franchise as it looks like it will be moving away from the "traditional" style of the franchise. This is apparent from the trailer where the narrator delivers despondent lines including "war is all we know," something that doesn't seem to fit in with the playful premise of a giant bug invasion.

One major difference that will likely be appreciated by fans is that "Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain" looks nicer compared with the other mainline EDF games, even the yet to be released "Earth Defense Force 5" which was also shown during Sony's press conference. Other than that, the game is still pretty much faithful to the franchise.
The enemies are still giant bugs and alien invaders with their giant robots. There are also a number of returning features from previous games in the franchise including mechanized suits and armored vehicles.
All of these were showcased in the trailer which shows a world invaded by giant insects and a band of elite warriors defending it. A glimpse of a tank that players can ride around in, and flying robo-suit you can take the battle to the skies in.
For gamers who want an alien shooter that doesn't have the name Destiny in it, they don't have to wait for long as "Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain" is set to be released next year. "Earth Defense Force 5" is also set for a Dec. 7 release date in Japan.
