Smart was kidnapped by onetime itinerant street preacher Brian David Mitchell from her own bedroom and gunpoint in 2002. She was held captive by Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee for nine months, and repeatedly raped.

She was only rescued after a biker recognized her as one of the missing on America’s Most Wanted at a diner. Mitchell was convicted of kidnapping and sexual assault and was sentenced to life in prison in May 2011. Barzee was sentenced to 15 years for her role in the kidnapping. Smart testified at Mitchell’s trial, describing her ordeal as “nine months of hell.”
