Fan Made 'Super Mario 64' Mod Allows Online Play

Fans can now enjoy "Super Mario 64" online thanks to a fan-made mod that allows up to 24 people to play together. The project is named SM64 and brings new life to Nintendo's 3D platformer.

SM64 is the result of the collaboration between Kaze Emanuar, Melonspeedruns and Marshivolt. The mod allows players to connect online, pick their character from a lineup of the franchise's iconic characters such as Peach, Wario, Mario, and Toad.

The mod is built on a "Super Mario 64" ROM for PC and aside from its online feature, it appears that nothing else was changed from the original version. This means that fans can enjoy a dose of nostalgia with up to 24 of their friends and relive their youth with one of the quintessential games of the '90s.

With online play, players can enjoy the game in ways that were never possible when it was released. Cause chaos by brawling, play hide-and-seek, race, everything is always fun with other people joining in.

Kaze Emanuar and company released a trailer for the mod as well as a tutorial video for those interested in downloading and playing the fan-made project for themselves.

The original "Super Mario 64" was released back in 1996 and has since left a lasting impression on a 3D game design by incorporating a dynamic camera system and implemented a 360-degree analog control. The game was a commercial success and was highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike hailing it as one of the most revolutionary video games of all time.

Years later, critics acknowledge that the game was a contributor to the anticipation, and initial success, of the Nintendo 64 console. As a result of its success and popularity, Nintendo re-released the game several times since its initial release. There was even a fan-remake of the game back in 2015, however, this was swiftly taken down due to copyright issues.
