'Final Fantasy VII' Remake Will Feature Dramatic Changes, Director Says

Japanese video game developer Square Enix has got "Final Fantasy VII" fans buzzing with excitement after announcing that it is now working on a remake, one that will feature dramatic changes.

In Square Enix's 2015 annual report, the company announced that it will remake its strongest IPs to meet the current demands of the gaming market, and that plan includes a remake for "Final Fantasy VII." The upcoming game is expected to undergo an overhaul in terms of graphics and battle system, but the core identity of the game will still be preserved, according to CrossMap.

Since Square Enix's older IPs were originally created to work with older hardware, they will not update them to become compatible with newer gaming consoles. In addition, they will aim to develop remakes that can be played using smart devices and other new gaming platforms, Tech Times reports.

The company said it wants to pay tribute to its loyal fans by allowing them to relive their experience with old games using the newest technology available. The company also wants the customers to enjoy their older IPs in a new context, the report relays.

"We're not able to say the details of (what's changing) but we are bringing dramatic change to the Final Fantasy 7 remake," CrossMap quotes "Final Fantasy VII" Director Tetsuya Nomura's statement. "We are going to be bringing dramatic change, but we want to make sure it's still recognizable as Final Fantasy 7."

Nomura further explained that they will not turn "Final Fantasy VII" into a shooter, but they will only implement major changes in the game, the report adds.

Meanwhile, Square Enix is looking into collaborations with other companies to expand its scope in the business. The company says it is always looking for more opportunities to grow.

As of now, the release date for "Final Fantasy VII Remake" is still unconfirmed, but there are rumors that the game will be out by 2017 to coincide with "Final Fantasy VII's" 20th anniversary.
