Game of Thrones Season 8 News: Directors Revealed

Two Emmy-award winning directors will be returning to helm the eighth and final season of HBO's hit fantasy drama series "Game of Thrones." With only six episodes left, it seems that the network is bringing in the fan favorites to give the show the send-off it deserves.

First off is Miguel Sapochnik who directed what is considered to be the series' finest episodes: Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter. Sapochnik's work in season 6 won him an Emmy in last year's 68th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The 43-year-old director took a break from the show during season 7 to shoot the pilot for Netflix's upcoming sci-fi drama Altered Carbon. But now he's back and all his focus seems to be only on the show at least for the next year.

Next is fellow Emmy Award-winner David Nutter who directed the season 5 finale "Mother's Mercy" and the infamous Red Wedding episode "Rains of Castamere." The 56-year-old Nutter is a revered industry veteran, dubbed "the pilot whisperer" for his ability to successfully launch new shows.

His pilot launching skills will not be needed this time however as he will be doing quite the opposite in giving "Game of Thrones" a fitting final season. Hopefully, he can repeat his Emmy award-winning performance this season.

However, neither Sapochnik nor Nutter will helm the series finale. That honor goes to the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss who have taken fans on a wild emotional roller coaster since the show's premiere back in 2011.

It's definitely fitting that the Benioff and Weiss be the one to send off perhaps their finest creation on its final episode. The two have already helmed episodes in the past and have switched back and forth on who gets the actual on-screen credit. It will be interesting to see who will get the credit for the series finale given that director's guild rules permit only one director can be credited for an episode of television.

"Game of Thrones" Season 8 is expected to premiere this 2018 only on HBO.
