Gervais and Timberlake were reported to have been enjoying the party and in their excitement and messing around they both dropped to the floor to take a picture together.

Gervais, who is famous for creating "The Office" posted the photo up on his Twitter account and tweeted the message, "@jtimberlake & I, lying on the floor at The Time 100 Most Influential People Gala. I blame the free booze."

Jimmy Fallon is then said to have joined in with the pair, and all three celebrities carried on the festivities, laughing and making jokes together throughout the night.

Fans of the celebs have found the picture hilarious and have now also taken to the Internet to post up copycat photos of themselves laying on the floor making weird and funny faces.

A new account on Twitter has even been set up, @floorpics, and people across the globe have started to upload photos of themselves on the floor.

Gervais immediately noticed that others were getting in on the fan, and he tweeted, "Who's going to be the first to start @accidentalfloorpics & get pictures of sleeping tramps & people who have fallen over? Haha."

Fans quickly responded, with dozens of photos uploaded to the page.

One Twitter user messaged the actor saying, "@callumcarlile1: My nanna fell over, she's been like this for 2 weeks now." The photo uploaded with the comment showed an old woman on the floor in the pose.

Gervais then joked back, "Well go through her purse then."

The comedian then made a call for everyone to join in: "You too could get an RT. Just get the oldest member of your family to lie on the floor and look unconscious. #oldfloorpics."

He was also quick to issue a warning, realizing the joke might get out of control – although making another joke at the same time: "Please remember you must not force old people to get on the floor. Gently coax them down by placing biscuits on the carpet near a radiator."

Gervais led the way for fans, spending a number of hours afterwards uploading pictures of people on the floor, recreating his own image.
