'Gone Home' Console Release Date Announced, New Version to Utilize Unity 5 Engine

The first-person interactive story-telling adventure video game "Gone Home" is finally going to be playable on consoles soon. According to a report by The Verge, the indie game developed for the PC by Fullbright Company can soon be played on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The plan of taking it from the PC to gaming console was initiated back in 2014. But when a publishing deal with Majesco flopped, Fullbright decided to cancel the console port of the popular PC game in March. It has been a long hiatus but it's all changed now since the deal is back on again. Partnering with Majesco's Midnight City division, the Oregon-based indie video game developer announced that the console version of the game will be released on Jan. 12, 2016.

"Ever since 'Gone Home' came out we've wanted to be able to bring it to people who maybe aren't PC gamers, or don't have a good enough computer, or who just want to play in their living room, maybe to share the experience with a friend or loved one from the comfort of their couch," says designer Steve Gaynor in The Verge report.

The new version that will soon be released is very much like the original game that earned critical commendation back in 2013. The company will not add or change things but they will bring the game in the best possible form that they can.

IGN detailed that Fullbright will make use of the Unity 5 engine for the game's new version. The PC version of the game had originally used Unity 4. A 90-minute behind-the-scenes developer commentary will also be included in the console versions.

In "Gone Home," players will be controlling a female college student who came home to visit her family after going on a trip through Europe. But the twist comes when she arrives to an empty house. Players must then explore and find out what happened.
