'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' News: 'Avengers' Crossover Rumor Revived as Fans Point to Gunn's Comments

For months now, fans have been wondering if it is possible for the cast of "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2" to appear in the upcoming "Avengers" film and recently, the excitement rose to its peak again as the director gave comments that made fans believe the rumor can become a reality.

In a recent Q&A with Twitter fans, director James Gunn answered a fan question that immediately gained the attention of other users and major outlets. Gunn was asked why there were no Guardians seen in the previous "Avengers" movie as well as the upcoming "Captain America" sequel.

To the excitement of many, Gunn replied: "Because they're currently in a different galaxy." According to Metro, the director's reply is the closest moviegoers have regarding the possibility of an "Avengers/Guardians" crossover.

Gunn's use of the word "currently" could open up doors for a crossover in the future, the outlet explains. Since there is no confirmation about which film the joint adventure will be featured or if it will ever happen, it could be safe to assume that the much-requested collaboration will be depicted in "Infinity War."

As fans already know, the search for the Infinity Stones connects all the heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and though it might need a lot of time and writing to come up with a story that fits an Avenger-Guardian joint mission, moviegoers are expecting that Marvel Studios will heed their request in the near future.

For the most part, Gunn seemed to have slammed the rumors in the past as he suggested many times in his earlier interviews that the alliance between two of the most iconic team-ups in the MCU is unlikely.

He told Screen Junkies last year: "We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don't think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all this, because we have our own galaxy to take care of."

"Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2" is slated for release on May 5, 2017.
