'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Spoilers, Plot News: Thanos Not Main Villain, New Guardians Join The Team
Thanos, the purple supervillain seen in some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, will not be the main villain in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed.
"No Country for Old Men" actor Josh Brolin has played the role of Thanos in "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015), and will reprise the role in the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1" and "Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2."
"I wouldn't look too hard in that movie for Thanos," Feige said in an interview with Empire magazine, fueling fan speculation for other potential main villains in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."

But though Thanos won't be in the "Guardians" sequel, Feige reassured Marvel fans that the mad villain, who also happens to be Gamora's (Zoe Saldana) adoptive father, will eventually see some action in future MCU films. "The next time we see Thanos he will not be messing around. It will be, 'Oh, that's why they've been teasing this villain for five years!" the Marvel boss teased.
Feige also spoke about another important detail of the upcoming "Guardians" sequel, revealing that fans can expect the Guardians lineup to expand. "There've been many different incarnations of the Guardians over the years in the comics and we'll catch a glimpse of additions over the course of the movie," he said.
The follow-up to the massively successful and well-received "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be helmed by director James Gunn and will begin filming in February in Atlanta. Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Saldana, Dave Bautista (Drax the Desroyer), Vin Diesel (Groot), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Michael Rooker (Yondu Udonta), Karen Gillian (Nebula), and Benicio del Toro (The Collector) have all been confirmed to return for the sequel.
Pom Klementieff has been cast as Mantis and Kurt Russell is currently in talks to appear as Star-Lord's father.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is set to hit cinemas on May 5, 2017.
