Ice Cream Sandwich Release Date: OS Features 'Nyandroid' Easter Egg (VIDEO)

Developers have found the "Easter egg" hidden within the code for the soon-to-be-released operating system Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Android Easter egg is an image or animation that users must "hunt" for by scouring their respective Android operating system interfaces.

The Ice Cream Sandwich Easter egg entails an Android alien outfitted with an ice cream sandwich body. Users can find the Easter egg by starting the Settings application, going to the About Phone section, and tapping the Android Version number repeatedly until the Android shows up.

A long-press causes the Android to groan and then several "Nyandroids" fly across the screen.

Technology website Phandroid believes that the Easter egg is a homage to the Nyancat viral video on YouTube that entails a pixel cat with a Pop tart body running along an endless screen.

The Nyancat video has been edited several times to feature various popular culture figures such as the flags of various countries and Nintendo's Mario.

Phandroid noted that it hopes developers will be able to extract the animation than convert it into a Life Wallpaper so that users can modify their Ice Cream Sandwich powered phones to have little Androids flying across their screens.

Both Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Android 3.0 Honeycomb also have Easter eggs hidden in their codes. Using the same method for finding the ICS Easter egg, Gingerbread users will find an image of the "Gingerbread zombie" and Honeycomb users will find an image of the "Rezzzzzzz" Honeycomb bumblebee.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first device that will release with Ice Cream Sandwich preloaded.

Ice Cream Sandwich is also the first OS to feature an animated Easter egg.
