Killer Issued Razor Before Suicide: Father of Murder Victim Says it Was No 'Mistake'

The father of Samantha Koenig, the 18-year-old who was killed in Alaska last year, has stated the he does not believe it was a mistake that his daughter killer was handed a razor before committing suicide.

James Koenig does not believe that it was a coincident that Israel Keyes, the man accused of murdering his daughter, was issued a razor just before his suicide. Keyes' body was found in his jail cell Dec. 2, months before going to trail for the slaying of the 18-year-old barista in Anchorage, Alaska. Keyes was founds with slits across his wrist and a noose wrapped around his neck and foot.

Prior to the incident, Keyes has been segregated from other inmates and put under heightened security after being discovered with a makeshift handcuff key and attempting to escape. The new measures included "full restraints, a two-officer escort any time he was out of the cell, and restrictions on possession of razors and pencils," an Associated Press report detailed.

A report released on Wednesday by the Alaska Department of Corrections stated that Keyes had been mistakenly issued a razor. The razor he used was also "not retrieved," AP reported.

"I don't think it was mistaken at all," James Koenig, who is upset that he and his family have been denied their day in court, explained. "How do you mistakenly give someone in segregation a real razor blade?"

Keyes abducted Samantha Koenig at gunpoint from a coffee stand in Alaska last February. She was raped and strangled before being stored in Keyes' shed for two weeks while he went away on a cruise.

Before his death, Keyes confessed to seven additional murders including the June, 2011 abduction and murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier. His other victims were never named.

Keyes was "a force of pure evil," Vermont's federal prosecutor, Tris Coffin, said in a December statement.
