The first incident involved two LAPD Wilshire detectives, and took place as they were in their vehicle attempting to clear an entry with a key card. A shooter opened fire at them in their car, and they responded by returning fire.

The suspect then fled the scene, but officers are describing him as a black male suspect between 30 and 35 years old. The detectives in that incident were injured and treated by medical professionals, but were later released.

Chief Charlie Beck has said: "This was a blatant attempt to assassinate two of the people that try to protect this community … We certainly must pursue all avenues to bring this individual into custody."

In the second incident a gunman shot at an LAPD officer and a county probation officer at about 7.30 p.m. local time. The police officer took a hit to the face, and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He underwent surgery overnight at a Los Angeles hospital.

Southern California Public Radio reported: "Los Angeles police say an officer who was shot in the face is out of surgery and the gunman is believed holed up in a Willowbrook home, 12 hours after the confrontation … Sgt. Albert Gonzalez tells KABC-TV that the officer is in stable condition in intensive care."

Chief Beck later tweeted: "Prayers to the LAPD officers injured in today's attacks-senseless violence against those who protect and serve others. Cb"
