Latest in College Football: Tom Herman Trainee Drew Mehringer Hired as New Rutgers OC
Rutgers football recently made an intriguing hire in Houston receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Drew Mehringer, making him the college football team's new offensive coordinator. The young coach is looked upon by many as one of the brightest young coaches and offensive wizards in the game today.
But who really is this guy?
The name may not sound familiar to casual college football fans, but Mehringer has established quite a reputation as a top protégé of Houston coach Tom Herman. He first rose to prominence as a co-offensive coordinator, as well as a play caller in 2014 for James Madison. This is where he molded Vad Lee to become a great quarterback in all of college football, in the process breaking school records in different categories including touchdowns, total offense, and yards.
The 28-year-old came to Houston to work with one of the brightest minds in football in the person of Herman. Joining Herman was some sort of reunion for both coaches because Mehringer actually played for Herman at Rice during his days at Rice. However, his career as a quarterback was short lived because of recurring injuries. He then went with Herman to Iowa State and Ohio State to train and serve as graduate assistant coach.
The hiring of Mehringer is no doubt a great upgrade for the Rutgers' coaching lineup. Head coach Chris Ash is a renowned defensive expert, but he needs someone like Mehringer to carry the offensive cudgels for the team. One great asset of Mehringer is that he has a natural talent in recruiting.
"He is a rising star in the profession. He is a very intelligent guy with a creative offensive mind. He's been around explosive offenses and winning programs," Ash said. "He will do a great job caring for and developing our players," the head coach added, sounding very optimistic about the newest member of his staff.
