Leaked Photos Point to Moto X Play Rebranded as Verizon's Droid Maxx 2
New leaked images have emerged suggesting Motorola's Moto X Play may enter the smartphone market as Verizon's as-yet-unannounced Droid Maxx 2.
Motorola recently launched its second smartphone this year to follow its flagship, the Moto X Style, and leaked images circulating the web point out the new Moto X Play will be launched in the US as the Droid Maxx 2 under Verizon.
The Droid Maxx 2 will be presented as the carrier's refreshed version of its Motorola Droid Maxx. Based on the images, the design appears to closely resemble the Moto X Play even to its grey-on-blue color and the subtle texture on its back cover. The only difference is the Verizon and Droid markings on its rear.

The speculations emerged when the Moto X Play was mysteriously taken off the shelves of Motorola's US retailer, and leaked images of what are reported to be the new Droid Maxx 2 appear to match the design and apparent specs of the Moto X Play.
Assuming Verizon's long-held relationship with the Illinois telecom has come to play, Motorola may have given the carrier rights to an exclusive rebranded smartphone.
Carrying a Snapdragon 615 SoC, an octa-core 1.65GHz CPU, and 2GB of RAM under a 5.5-inch 1080p display, the Droid Maxx 2, just like the Motorola X Play, sports a 21MP rear camera and a 3,630mAh battery powering the device. It is expected to run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box.
One noticeable difference is a storage downgrade. While the Moto X Play has 16GB and 32 GB of internal storage, the Droid Maxx 2 only has 8.14GB, an unlikely low storage capacity for what is considered a mid-range device.
The Droid Maxx 2's price point is still unknown, but it is expected to sell for an estimated $400, basing from Verizon's upcoming full-price flagship, the Droid Turbo 2, that's expected to be released together with the Droid Maxx 2 over the Christmas holidays.
