Madonna Set to Perform at Super Bowl 2012?

Pop star Madonna is set to perform at the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, sources close to the NFL have said.

SBNation.com reports that the Material Girl is expected to take the stage during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

If sources hold true, Madonna would be the first female entertainer to headline the half time show since Janet Jackson in 2004.

Jackson infamously had a wardrobe malfunction with hit singer Justin Timberlake after exposing her chest in front of an estimated billion viewers worldwide. After heavy fines from the FCC, the NFL vowed to create a tamer show for the future.

Previous performers since 2004 have included Paul McCartney, The Who, and Tom Petty; all performers who the NFL have deemed family-safe.

If Madonna indeed performs, it would be a bold move for Super Bowl organizers since the singer is known for her risqué acts and lyrics.

With superstar group the Black Eyed Peas alongside Usher performing last year, signs have recently pointed to the NFL loosening the chain when it comes to entertainers.

Although this is the first time that Madonna is expected to take the stage, it’s not the first time the superstar has been scheduled to perform during halftime.

Madonna was set to perform her song “American Pie” at Super Bowl XXXV in 2000 but backed out a few days before stating scheduling conflicts.

The NFL is not commenting at the time whether the rumors of her appearing during halftime are true.
