Miami Dolphins NFL Rumors: Dennis Hickey and Team Mutually Part Ways
Dennis Hickey was hired by the Miami Dolphins two years ago to lead the team to a new direction. But after several misfits and bad luck in the team's two seasons with him as general manager, the marriage has ended.
The team made it official on Saturday — Hickey is no longer the Dolphins' general manager and that the decision was made based on a "mutual" understanding between the two parties. This is according to team vice president Mike Tannenbaum. "I want to thank Dennis for his work over the last two years. We talked about a number of different possibilities, but at the end we reached this agreement," Tannenbaum said.
Hickey came on board the Dolphins front office when owner Stephen Ross personally hired him back in January of 2014, or immediately after former general manager Jeff Ireland was fired amid the Richie Incognito scandal. But his stint with the team wasn't really the most ideal one, particularly when it comes to the kind of power and influence he had over the team's decision-making process. When Tannenbaum was hired a little over a year later, the man became a very influential figure, essentially taking full control of the team's operations.
Prior to this season, there was already some talk that Hickey was on his way out and the only thing that could save his job was a good performance from the team; something which obviously did not happen. There are reports that there is already someone in place to assume Hickey's duties as GM and it is Chris Grier. Grier is already a member of the team, currently playing the role of director of college scouting.
Hickey released his own official statement later. "I have been blessed to be the general manager of the Miami Dolphins for the last two seasons and I want to thank Stephen Ross for giving me this opportunity," he said.
With the general manager out, there will be some more changes expected, starting with finding a new head coach. It looks like Dan Campbell won't be promoted to the regular head coaching job after filling in on interim basis.
