Milwaukee Bucks Roster Rumors 2016: Jared Cunningham Signed to 10-Day Contract
The Milwaukee Bucks are in desperation mode this season, no thanks to a bunch of injuries they had to face recently. The team, through General Manager John Hammond, announced that they have pursued their right to the league's hardship exception to sign NBA journeyman Jared Cunningham to a 10-day contract.
According to NBA.com, the hardship exception gives a team a temporary roster spot to breach the 15-man roster limit. It happens when there are four injured players who have missed three or more consecutive games and are deemed to be incapable of playing by a doctor or medical professional who isn't part or employed by that team.
The 24-year old Cunningham has been bouncing in and out of the league; he last saw action for the Idaho Stampede in the D-League, where he produced decent numbers of 17.3 points and 3.3 rebounds, although he only played in three games.
The former Oregon State standout actually was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers before the start of the season and managed to play in 40 games. He however was traded to Orlando in a deal that sent Channing Frye to Cleveland.
The Bucks' realized they were in for a miserable campaign this season after losing two of their best guards in O.J. Mayo and Michael Carter-Williams, both of which had to sit out the rest of the year. Likewise, another guard and regular contributor, Greivis Vasquez, is still recovering from a right ankle injury.
Cunningham's 10-day contract is intended to give the 24th pick of the 2012 NBA Draft enough opportunities to show what he can contribute to a team that's desperately in need of able bodies right now. It is a common practice in the league to give players like him a couple of 10-day contracts before they decide to either keep or let him go for the rest of the season. However, this privilege can only be utilized during the regular season.
