NASCAR News and Rumors 2016: Joe Gibbs Racing Makes Executive Team Changes
NASCAR's Joe Gibbs Racing announced major executive team changes, with J.D. Gibbs officially joining his father Joe Gibbs, as a co-chairman of the team. The announcement was made last Thursday by Coy Gibbs, Joe's other son and the newly installed vice-chairman and chief operations officer for JGR. Meanwhile, another company executive, Dave Alpern, has been promoted as the team's new president — the same position J.D. left after getting promoted as co-chairman.
But the executive team movement does not end there. JGR also announced that Tim Carmichael will be given additional responsibilities as the chief financial officer, while Wally Brown is the new competition director. The technical director position will be filled by Todd Bowland.
In line with the changes, it was revealed right after the changes that Todd Meredith has resigned as COO, but it looks like it was a decision mutually agreed upon by JGR and Meredith, considering that he still will be acting as a consultant while looking for better opportunities in the industry.
But it certainly appears that all the movements done in the past couple of days are focused on giving room for Coy to be afforded more responsibilities in an official capacity, thereby giving him a clearer and larger role in the NASCAR operations of the team. This is confirmed by his father in a statement released to the press:
"We feel like the timing is right to bring Coy into the NASCAR operations in a more official capacity. He had done an outstanding job with our motocross operations and will continue to provide his leadership as well."
Coy is no stranger to handling business, though. He was instrumental in launching JGRMX back in 2008. Since then, he has been on the driver's seat in the operations, sponsor acquisitions, competition direction, and down to personnel decisions for the motocross team. The team added that he still will be the man in charge for JGRMX while at the same time handling the operations aspect of the NASCAR team.
