'New Girl' and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Crossover News and Update: An Over-hyped, Half-baked Crossover, to the Fans Disappointment
It is not unusual for a TV network to, just out of the blue, order two directors of two different sitcoms do a one-shot episode of their TV series. Really, like mash it up, and hope that two different plots stick together. It is no easy feat and both directors would have to agree and cooperate with one another in order to succeed. Crossovers, although very tricky, can totally boost ones rating if done right.
But when Fox decided and announced a one-episode crossover of "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", two of the network's hit comedy TV series, the gods of comedy decided to frown upon them. The end product? An episode that fell short of the fans' expectation.
"New Girl" is Fox's hit TV series about an energetic young woman named Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) who lives in an apartment loft with three men. First aired in 2011, the TV show garnered five Golden Globe Awards and a multitude of nominations during its five-year tenure.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is about Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a young detective who, most of the time if not always, beats his colleagues in solving crimes. The young sleuth's laidback and often times "devil may care" attitude always calls the attention of his immediate boss in a negative manner. The show has been a winner of several awards and garnered 58 different nominations ever since its pilot episode first came out last 2014.
When these two independent plots were meshed together in a crossover as a recap of both shows' season finale, the resulting episode is one step short from being a total failure. There was no "coming together of ideas", to the bitter disappointment of the fans of both series, just two sitcoms thrown in an episode. The only perk this time is you get to see Jess and Jake interact and laugh together inside a car during a high-speed chase.
"Even next to the typically immature Peralta, Jess looked like an idiot. Complaining first about how New York had it out for her and then about how the detective should "serve and protect" her soup only to be silenced when Jake told her: You're making a point you don't even believe in." Bitter words from a review of the crossover episode of "Nightshift" and "Homecoming".
Although both shows were able to justify each other's arcs and updates for the last season, the fans felt robbed with the promise of a good crossover and coming together of both worlds.
