New York Knicks Roster News, Rumors: Jimmer Fredette Likely to Land 10-Day Contract
The New York Knicks have the rare luxury of choosing from a suddenly rich field of free agents after the trade deadline has passed. There are several guys who can be valuable assets in one or a couple of years, but most of them are frontcourt players. The team, on the other hand, is trying to get someone who is a legitimate outside threat, who in this case is highly epitomized by former basketball prodigy Jimmer Fredette.
According to multiple reports, the Knicks are already on the verge of signing the sweet-shooting guard from their D-League affiliate, after a series of impressive performances that saw him average 22.3 points per game for the Westchester Knicks. In the D-League All-Star game, he was named the most valuable player after scoring 35 points.
The 26-year-old was a huge star in college for BYU, where he established himself as one of the most intriguing NBA prospects prior to the 2011 NBA Draft. He eventually was taken with the 10th pick and started his career in Sacramento. He played for two and a half seasons with the team, averaging 6.0 points.
He decided to join the D-League to improve his game and prove to everyone, including himself, that he still has what it takes to become a legitimate NBA player. Thanks to a ridiculously accurate outside shooting ability, he torched every defender while playing for Westchester, and now the Knicks have taken notice of it.
New York has a roster spot available for them to sign another player after they declined to offer Thanasis Antetokounmpo another 10-day contract. While the team is trying to find a point guard who can score more than Jose Calderon and Langston Galloway, they may have to settle for Fredette as of the moment and see if he can carry his hot shooting against better perimeter defenders in the league.
