Nike MAG Release Date: Nike Confirms 'Back To The Future' Inspired Footwear Featuring Self-Tightening Laces

Nike plans to re-release the Nike MAG shoes this year, this time with a new self-tightening laces which are inspired by the pair worn by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in the 1989 film "Back to the Future Part II."

The confirmation came via FHM U.K. in their official Twitter account on Friday afternoon.

"Back to the Future fans rejoice! Nike are set to release Marty Mcfly's incredible 2015 self-lacing shoes this year," the tweet read.

The news was also confirmed by Tinker Hatfield, a Nike shoe designer, on Tuesday during the Agenda Emerge trade show held in Long Beach, California.

He stated that he and his team were still working on the Nike MAG and its self-tightening Power Laces. However, he also took care to remind interested consumers that there were still "11 and two-thirds months left in 2015," so the footwear will definitely not come immediately.

Nike's "Back to the Future" inspired footwear and its Power Laces have been making news since last year when Hatfield opened up the possibility of the self-tightening laces.

The Nike MAG, which had a surprise launch in 2011, was initially auctioned off on eBay with only 1,500 pairs made available. However, the self-tightening laces were still a distant dream at the time until Hatfield's confirmation last year in February that Nike was close to working on a futuristic lacing system.

Fans were also delighted to find out when Nike filed a patent for the power laces in July. It was said to come with motorized rollers that were embedded in the soles and could be operated by pressing a button on the side of the shoe or will respond automatically to a changing weight. The laces will then wrap itself around the wearer's foot and tighten themselves.

Nike and Hatfield are keeping mum on the progress of the Nike MAG and its Power Laces, but hopefully fans will be able to get their hands on the futuristic footwear before the year's end.
