Oakland Raiders Rumors 2015: Charles Woodson Announces Retirement
Charles Woodson is a surefire Hall-of-Fame entrée. He's one of the best and most versatile defensive backs in the history of the NFL. And now that he announced his retirement after 18 years in pro football, everyone looks at it as a fitting end to his storied career.
The Oakland Raiders safety told the media on Monday about his plans of retiring at the end of the 2015 season. "2015 is going to be my last season playing in the NFL. Was it a tough decision? Kind of in a way; but a couple of weeks ago it hit me that this would be it. It is important for me to let Raider Nation know now," the 39-year-old said in an emotional press release.
The American football great is right now the oldest active safety in the league. He is a product of Michigan's football program, when during his stint he guided the Wolverines to the 1997 national championship. One of the things that makes him an incredible player is that he plays offense and defense, without compromising one over the other. He also is a recipient of the Heisman Trophy during Michigan's championship year.
As a pro footballer, he played cornerback for Oakland and Green Bay, where he earned three first-team All-Pro distinctions. As he aged, he eventually realized he no longer could be as competitive at cornerback, so he made a successful transition to safety.
Oakland Raiders general manager has nothing but praise for his veteran safety. "Charles Woodson is one of those players that comes along and reminds you why you love the game," he said in a statement.
There are only very few defensive backs in the league who can boast the same set of achievements Woodson has in his career. He is currently tied on the top spot for the most career defensive touchdowns and is listed sixth all time in interceptions.
