Oculus Ex-President Palmer Luckey Still Working In VR Industry
He may have sold his company to Facebook for a whopping $2.5 billion but Oculus founder and former President Palmer Luckey is not abandoning the virtual reality industry altogether. After leaving the company earlier this year, he now has a new virtual reality company and is pretty much set on working in the industry for the foreseeable future.
Luckey took to the HTC stage at this year's Tokyo Game Show and said that among other business ventures, he still very much in the VR industry.
"I have a new company," said Luckey. "I can't talk about my projects too much yet, but I'm still working in the virtual reality industry on some very exciting things."
Luckey left Facebook back in March after going through intense scrutiny from the press and game industry in the wake of news that he'd been helping fund the alt-right "shitposting" group Nimble America. Since his departure, he has started a new company focused on border protection.
Despite being out of the VR company he founded, the 25-year-old has maintained interest in the VR business, even pondering the thought of buying HTC for some time. While it seems that he no longer has plans to acquire the company, he seems to be open to the idea of working with them. He also affirmed his passion for virtual reality and not just with the Oculus brand.
"Don't think of me as an Oculus person," he said. "Just think of me as a VR person. Everything. Sony, HTC, other companies. Everything."
Back in June, it was reported that Luckey has pledged thousands of dollars to a project that aims to unlock Oculus Rift-exclusive games for HTC Vive. The company has recently renewed its interest in supporting its Vive headset thanks to a $1.1 billion deal with Google. This probably served as the catalyst to seek out one of the top people in the industry.
