Oculus Rift VR Release Date: Pre-Orders to Begin January

The Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset will be released in early 2016 and pre-orders will start right after New Year.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey announced that pre-orders for the Oculus Rift VR headset will go live starting January. While he did not mention the exact date of the beginning of pre-orders, he said they do not want to stress out their customers with unannounced pre-orders, according to Christian Today (CT).

"Preorders are coming soon after new year," CT quotes Luckey's statement on Twitter. "Enjoy a stress-free holiday, we won't launch preorders without warning!"

The highly anticipated VR headset will reportedly run an Intel Core i5 processor with 8 GB of RAM. In addition, it will work more smoothly with computers with at least a GTX 970 or R9 290 for graphics, the report details.

Several games were announced for the Oculus Rift VR headset, but players will be delighted to know that the device will be bundled with a free "Lucky's Tale" app from Playful Corp when it is released in the first quarter of 2016. The game involves a fox called Lucky that players will have to guide through various places, the International Business Times reports.

Playful developed "Lucky's Tale" specifically for Oculus Studios. Luckey said the game has made them realize the true potential to change people's view of VR gaming, the report relays.

Players who tried "Lucky's Tale" during an Oculus Rift VR demo raved about the game, describing it as something like a third-person version of "Super Mario 64." Chris Kohler of Wired said it felt like the player was actually inside the game.

As of now, the exact release date of the Oculus Rift VR headset is yet to be announced by its makers. The company has also not yet revealed the price range of the device, but experts estimate it to hover around $350 to $500. More details about the VR headset are expected to emerge next year.
