'Penny Dreadful' News: First Season 3 Trailer Airs, Showtime Confirms Premiere Date

Showtime's hit gothic horror drama TV series "Penny Dreadful" is finally confirmed to return to the small screens this summer.

According to SlashFilm.com, Season 3 will see the stakes getting higher as the characters are now set to face yet "even greater challenges."

Despite beating the evil witch Evelyn (Helen McCrory) and successfully resisting the demon's temptations, it seems like things are going downhill for Eva Green's fan-favorite Vanessa Ives.

The promo video shared by the network revealed the dreaded state of Vanessa. Getting hints from the Season 2 finale, it would seem like the latter will be facing the new chapter alone as Ethan (Josh Hartnett) is now on his way back to America. Her kind adoptive father, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) is now off to Africa to lay the remains of the group's dearest butler, Sembene (Danny Sapani), to rest. Even her contemplative chats with the poetic Mr. Clare (Rory Kinnear) might not be happening soon after she discovered what the creature is capable of doing.

As per the usual, the highlight reel featured the heroine once again facing the dangers in both the physical and the spiritual realms. Making matters worse for the character is the fact that she will be facing these struggles while being confined in a padded cell.

"Two brothers. Fallen from Grace. The spirit…and the animal. You seek my soul…you my body. But both are promised to another," Vanessa can be heard talking.

What is further interesting is the revelation that Patti LuPone will be coming back in Season 3. The actress first played the Cut-Wife in Season 2. Now, she assumes a completely different character named Dr. Seward, Vanessa's therapist.

The video also dropped a glimpse of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lily Frankenstein (Billie Piper) on their way to fulfilling their promise to their creator, Victor (Harry Treadaway). The duo will further be getting some help from a young recruit, Justine, who is played by Jessica Barden.

"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 premieres May 1 at 10 p.m. EST.
