Philadelphia Eagles News and Rumors 2016: Doug Pederson Announced as New Head Coach
Professional sports teams in the United States have this trend of hiring their former players to become coaches, and that is what exactly transpired during the Philadelphia Eagles coaching hunt. The team announced that Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Eagles quarterback has been hired as its new head coach.
Pederson was personally chosen by team owner Jeffrey Lurie to replace the recently fired Chip Kelly. The 47-year-old coach beat several worthy candidates including former Giants coach Tom Coughlin, Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, interim coach Pat Shurmur, and Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther.
Pederson was a popular American football player during his days, backing up Brett Favre in Green Bay for the most part. After a decent career as a player, he eventually retired and ventured into coaching in the league. He spent four seasons with the Eagles where he played the role of offensive quality control coordinator from 2009 up until 2011 when he transitioned to becoming a quarterbacks coach. He then left the Eagles to sign with Kansas City almost three years ago.
The hiring of Pederson is expected to be a move to completely do away with the system of former coach Chip Kelly, suggesting that they now can focus on winning games instead of trying to embrace a complex system that breeds losing.
The new coach is expected to make moves to improve the coaching staff as soon as he is officially hired. For instance, hiring a defensive coordinator is a tough act to perform considering the fact that there are several ones out there who come with the best credentials, including Jim Schwartz, Ed Donatell, and Perry Fewell.
Also, the team recently acquired Ken Flajole; in which his job involves coaching the team's linebackers. He previously had a stint as defensive coordinator for the Cardinals and was able to give a good impression about himself.
