PlayStation 4 Slim vs. PlayStation 4 Neo: Which PS Console is Better? Specs, Prices and Release Dates
You know you're top tier when your toughest competitor is yourself, as Sony is set to prove during the September launch of two of its best consoles: the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Neo.
The two consoles are expected to join the battle for best console around, especially after Microsoft dropped the gauntlet on Project Scorpio, which claims to be the best console ever. To be sure, Sony wouldn't take that claim sitting down. And while there aren't any specific dates as to when its own bets will launch, both are expected to happen this year, with the Slim this September and the Neo to release alongside the October 13 PlayStation VR date.
The PS4 Slim is exactly that: a skinnier version of the original PS4. On the other hand, the PS4 Neo (called the PS4.5 or the PS4K) purports improved specs and body refreshes. It is also rumored to pack 4K and VR support. But once they're both out on the market, which console should you gun for?
Price and specs
Let's just get this out of the way, fast: the PS4 Neo isn't going to be a bargain, as it is rumored to have a $399 price tag. Which makes sense given that the Neo is slightly different internally than the current PS4. It has 4K video support and HDR output, and is packed with an upgraded 2.1-GHz octacore processor, enhanced GPU and faster RAM. While powerful enough to support 4K video, it still won't be able to provide native 4K gaming.
The PS4 Slim, on the other hand, is simply a slimmer version of its predecessors, and will have the same capabilities as the PS4. Apparently, Sony is just more concerned about giving it a body refresh than upgrading the specs, although it is said to have improved internals for better frame rates. It is also expected to release with a new DualShock controller with an additional light bar on top of the controller. A noticeably absent feature, however, is an optical audio port.
Earlier this month, a Gumtree ad leaked online showing what appears to be a PS4 slim pegged at around $300 - definitely cheaper than the Neo.
Games
No need to worry about hauling your PlayStation 4 games as they will continue to work with the Slim and the Neo. According to Andrew House, Sony PlayStation head, the Neo is intended to "complement" the standard PS4. Now, however, new PS4 games are going to launch with two published modes: a base mode and enhanced "Neo" mode, designed specifically to exploit the extra power on the Neo.
Now you can also share saved data between the hardware variations, and even play multiplayer with another PS4 gamer regardless of the model they're using. Both consoles can support VR gaming, but the experience will be more optimal under the Neo.
Overall, the Neo packs a better gaming experience and guaranteed your money's worth. So hold out your precious pennies for a couple more months!
