Real Madrid on Brink of 15th Straight Win if They Beat FC Basel, Carlo Ancelotti Unconcerned With Record
Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti will be fielding their strongest team against FC Basel on Wednesday's Champions League Group B match. The team already qualifies for the last 16 but in order to take hold of the top spot, they only need to avoid a defeat of four goals or more.
Real Madrid already have 12 points, Basel have six, while Liverpool and Ludogorets each have three points. If Basel manages to win, it will put them against Ludogorets if Liverpool fails to overcome the Bulgarian club.
"It's true that we have already qualified but we need to play well and win to finish first in the group," says Ancelotti during a news conference. "And that's what we'll do, playing the best possible match with the best possible team."
The team has been playing admirably and relentlessly, already on their 14th straight win. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the team as its top scorer and if they win against Basel, it will set a record equaling run of 15 straight wins. Even as they are on the verge of completing the feat, Ancelotti is not concerned about it.
"I'm not thinking about the record. But it is important for history," said Ancelotti Tuesday. "What is more important for us is to play well in the games because if this team has got to this level it is because they have prepared well and played with good concentration. So, no, we don't think of the record."
"What I do to enter into the history of this club is important, but we can only achieve it working well as we are doing," he added.
